Boredom for truckers can lead to poor decision-making on the road

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2018 | Truck Accidents

Driving for a long period of time can be a monotonous experience. Especially for those stuck driving on the highway, road hypnosis could pose a real risk. Staring at the same scenery and listening to the hum of traffic can make someone who might otherwise be awake and alert feel sleepy and groggy.

If you have ever experienced this, you likely know how stressful driving long distances can be. That might give you a little more empathy for the people who commercially drive big trucks for a living. These individuals often work incredibly long shifts with no company or external stimulation. They have to drive very demanding vehicles for long distances through all kinds of traffic and weather.

Truck driving is certainly not an easy job, but too many people in this career fail to take the responsibilities of the job seriously enough. The end results of a flippant attitude for the daily requirements of truck driving can be a tragic accident that was otherwise preventable.

Exhaustion can leave drivers vulnerable to mistakes

Whether road hypnosis or a long day is the primary contributing factor, fatigue at the wheel is dangerous. It can make it harder for people to focus and may result in questionable decisions in stressful moments.

Exhausted truck drivers may have a variety of tricks, from drinking caffeinated beverages to listening to loud music to help themselves stay alert and awake on the road for hours. Unfortunately, when those tactics fail, the end result may be an otherwise preventable tragedy. Some truck drivers even engage in distraction as a means of keeping themselves awake and alert on the road.

Distraction is a very dangerous condition at the wheel

Distraction impacts the ability of anyone to control their vehicle adequately. Whether someone focuses on a conversation with another person in the vehicle or wants to type out a text message, diverting the attention of the driver from the vehicle is dangerous and has become a common practice. It can increase reaction times, decrease the ability of the driver to respond to changes in traffic conditions and increase the risk of a bad decision at the wheel.

These consequences are even more significant for commercial drivers. After all, their vehicles often take more effort to control. Adding a longer reaction time to the situation could be the difference between a tragedy and a safe trip. While long hours on the road may make it very tempting to send a text message or check email, commercial truck drivers should abide by federal regulations which prohibit any form of text-based mobile communication while in control of a commercial vehicle.

Truck driving is not an easy job, but that is why good drivers make a premium wage for this demanding career. Anyone who winds up hurt by a truck driver who was breaking the law or cutting corners may have grounds to pursue a lawsuit against the driver or even their employer. Carefully looking into the details of the crash can help you determine what options may be available to you after a truck accident.
