July 4 holiday sees increase in auto claims

According to a leading, auto accident claim rates are 7 percent higher on July 4 and the three days leading up to it compared to Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The claims rate may increase because of increased traffic . Furthermore, Iowa drivers may be tired or on routes that they are not familiar with, which may cause them to become distracted.

Drivers are encouraged to plan their routes ahead of time and check them for accuracy. This may reduce the possibility of making sudden lane changes or turns because a driver is following the advice of a GPS. Drivers are also encouraged to reduce distractions such as eating or reading a map while driving. A GPS may also be a distraction if not used properly. It is also a good idea to inspect and repair any damage to a vehicle before traveling.

Those who are driving especially long distances are encouraged to take regular breaks to reduce the odds of becoming too tired to operate a motor vehicle. Drivers are also reminded that they should have a designated driver or public transportation lined up if they plan to drink. An emergency kit containing water, road flares and batteries may also be worth having on a road trip.

A car accident may leave a victim with a brain injury or other serious harm. These injuries may require extended stays in a hospital, multiple surgeries or months of rehab. Those who have been hurt in an accident that was caused by the negligence of another motorist may want to have a lawyer's assistance in seeking compensation for the losses that they have incurred.
