Motorcycles are popular here. After all, with Iowa’s wide open spaces and beautiful countryside, there is no wonder why. But, motorcycle accidents happen, and sometimes, fatal motorcycle accidents happen. Unfortunately, far too often motorcycle accidents are fatal or involve serious injuries because motorcycles provide zero protections in an accident. A recent accident in Lee County is a prime example.
The motorcycle accident
According to Iowa State Troopers, the accident occurred before 6:00 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 2. A large construction-type truck was stopped at a worksite. A motorcycle, driven by a 67-year-old Donnellson man and his passenger, a 67-year-old local, was also stopped behind the truck.
However, a third vehicle did not stop, and collided with the motorcycle from behind. Unfortunately, both died as a result of the collision, and the driver of that third vehicle was taken to the hospital. Though, the accident is still under investigation.
Options after a fatal motorcycle accident
Some people may think that motorcyclists are risk takers, and insurance companies often use this mistaken belief to their advantage by trying to blame the victim motorcyclist. Even when the evidence looks clear, the insurance company or the potentially liable party may still try to feed into this bias.
This is why contacting an experienced attorney can be so important. It is imperative to collect and preserve evidence immediately. This includes witness statements and vehicle skid marks. These facts can make the personal injury or wrongful death case much easier to win to get the compensation victims need to recover.
