Winter weather means taking precautions while driving

On Behalf of | Dec 3, 2018 | Car Accidents

Winter weather conditions in Iowa and across the United States can make driving dangerous. Slick roads from snow and ice as well as sudden blizzards can cause car accidents to occur. Learning how to navigate the roads during winter weather may help drivers and passengers arrive at their destinations safely.

Before leaving home, it’s a good idea to always check the weather. If a storm has been forecasted, it may be best to wait out the weather issues and make alternative arrangements. If it’s absolutely necessary to travel, plan to leave early in order to arrive at the destination on time with slower traffic. Additionally, it’s wise to always share travel plans and routes with friends or loved ones and check in with them. Before driving, warm up the car and check it over to ensure it is ready for winter weather. Tires should have good tread and be pumped up to the recommended pressure. The antifreeze should be filled, and wiring and tubing should be inspected prior to leaving.

While driving, leave eight to 10 seconds in between the vehicles and drive slowly. Never use cruise control while driving in winter weather conditions. Furthermore, it’s important to gently pump the brakes to prevent skids and slides from occurring. If a storm suddenly hits while traveling, pull over to the side of the road until the storm has passed. Do not attempt to drive during a snowstorm as it will be difficult to see the road and other drivers.

When a car slides or skids due to icy roads, it can cause a car accident that may lead to totaled vehicles, costly medical bills and other damages. Drivers who drive negligently during winter weather may be responsible for such an accident. A lawyer could represent a crash victim by filing a personal injury claim on their behalf.
