Drinking and driving: Why people cause accidents

Drinking and driving is something everyone knows is dangerous — it's not even a question. Still, some people feel it's safe for them to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. Unfortunately, that often leads to injuries to other people when the drunk driver causes a car accident.

If you've been involved in a drunk-driving accident caused by someone else, you may wonder what it is about alcohol that makes people want to get behind the wheel. One of the main reasons is because alcohol lowers inhibitions and contributes to making poor decisions. That means that a person who is normally reasonable may decide that getting behind the wheel is absolutely fine.

A person is considered to be legally drunk when his or her blood alcohol concentration is .08 percent or higher. That doesn't mean that a person with a BAC lower than .08 isn't feeling the effects of alcohol, though. In fact, commercial drivers can't be behind the wheel if their blood alcohol concentrations are .04 or higher.

Around 12,000 people die every year as a result of drunk driving. With additional education and smart decisions, many of those lives could be saved.

Your attorney can help you file a claim against the driver who hit you while drunk. While the charges for drunk driving are handled in criminal court, they can still help you get the most out of your claim, either in civil court or through an insurance provider. With the right documentation and evidence to support your claim, you can negotiate for an appropriate settlement for your damages and losses.
