What you should know about staying safe on New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve can be a busy, exciting night, but drinking can make a fun night go wrong if precautions aren't taken. Interestingly, because New Year's Eve often leads to intoxication and is a holiday where many people don't work in the health care sector, New Year's Day is actually one of the most dangerous days in the year to go to the hospital; if you're involved in an accident, you're at a higher risk of death due to fewer staff members being on call. Heart attacks and other natural causes of death also spike between the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Another thing to know about New Years' Eve is that drunken walking can be as much a danger as getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. It's been shown that around 24 pedestrians are killed on New Year's Day throughout the United States, and this makes Jan. 1 the deadliest day for pedestrians. Over half the pedestrians killed in accidents have high blood alcohol levels, so keep this in mind if you're planning on walking home after an event.

Pedestrian accidents make up around 10 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States each year. Thirty-six percent of fatally injured pedestrians ages 16 and older had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher. If you are going to be with friends, make sure you aren't walking or driving if your BAC is too high; instead, see if you can stay overnight at a friend's house, get a hotel room where you are or get a taxi ride home.

If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident that wasn't your fault, you may wish to file a personal injury lawsuit to recoup some of your damages.
