What you can do to help prevent drunk driving crashes

Drinking and driving causes thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries every year. While you can't make every person stop and think before getting behind the wheel, you can help make yourself safer by taking a stand when it comes to people in your own life.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 28 people die each day as a result of drunk driving crashes. One in six teens binge drinks, and alcohol causes 4,700 deaths a year. These crashes are a leading cause of death among teens.

What can you do to help protect yourself and the people you love? First, start asking questions. If you have a teenager, it's important to discuss the true dangers of drinking and driving. Only one in 100 parents surveyed by MADD believed their teens drank, while one in six did in reality. Take the time to talk to your kids about the risks involved.

Another thing you can do is to make sure anyone you're with who seems too intoxicated to drive or who has been drinking throughout the night has a ride home or a place to stay. Your friend might have had too much to drink but feels it's still safe to drive, but you have the ability to stop him or her and to provide an alternative solution.

Finally, be responsible. If you see a drunk driver or someone who is driving erratically, call the police. It's better to be safe and to have the driver stopped than to end up in an accident or witnessing one that could have been prevented.
