Child hurt in drunk driving crash in Kewanee

When a person drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, it puts his or her life, as well as the lives of those around him or at risk. For instance, if a drunk driver pulls out into traffic prematurely, he or she can cause a pile-up accident or run other vehicles off the road as the drivers try to avoid him or her.

Sometimes, drivers have passengers in the vehicle that could be put at risk, too. For example, a child and his or her friend riding with a drunken parent or guardian could be put in danger if a crash occurs. The person driving can be held accountable for those injuries, even if the child is his or her own.

An accident in Kewanee has led to a DUI charge for one 35-year-old man. According to a news report from July 22, the man has been charged with aggravated reckless driving and felony aggravated driving under the influence following a serious crash.

The news reports say that the man was driving a Chevy van when he was under the influence. It was then, at around 6:30 p.m., that he sped over a hill and nearly hit a vehicle that was in front of him. As he swerved into the oncoming lane, his vehicle left the roadway and hit a stop sign and utility pole. A child under the age of 16 suffered injuries in the van.

The man was also issued a traffic ticket, which was for improper lane usage. He has been held on a bond of $30,000. It's not clear if the child has suffered severe injuries or if he will recover; in cases like this, the child's health could play a role in sentencing if the child suffers a disability or other concerns post-accident.
