Stand up for yourself after a pedestrian accident in Iowa

As a pedestrian in Iowa, you have rights when you're near the roadways. You are allowed to legally cross at crosswalks, and drivers have a responsibility to stay under the speed limit to make sure there's time to slow down if a pedestrian is crossing the road. If you're jogging on the side of the road where there are no walkways or sidewalks, cars should move over and give you enough room, so they don't strike you when they pass.

Despite these things seeming like common sense, many people are still hit and injured each year in pedestrian accidents. Pedestrians can be struck at almost any time; pedestrians can even be victimized when they aren't on the road if a driver goes up onto a sidewalk or into a structure. The same struggle applies to bicyclists, too.

Bicyclists have a right to ride on the road with other vehicles, except on highways in most states. In many cases, these cyclists are keeping up with the speed of traffic, meaning they are going 25, 30, or even 40 mph while having little protection against a crash. Drivers shouldn't approach too closely and should be watching to make sure they look for bicyclists on the road. There's no reason to get too close to cyclists, because even a minor, low-speed accident could lead to serious injuries or death.

Our website has more information about bicycling and pedestrian accidents and what to do if you've been left with injuries. You have rights as a victim, and it's important that you speak up to help remind people that the roads are shared regardless of the mode of transportation.
