When is Motorcycle Awareness Month in Iowa?

Despite the fact that it may seem like motorcyclists don't get much attention in the way of protection from injuries, some people are working to change that. In Iowa, Governor Terry Branstad has signed a proclamation that has made March Motorcycle Awareness Month. On top of this, motorcycle enthusiasts have stepped up to ask people to make sure to look twice before turning or changing lanes. Doing this could save lives.

Motorcyclists do several things to be seen on the roads. Have you ever witnessed motorcyclists weaving in their lanes and wondered if there was something wrong? There isn't. Moving back and forth increases the odds of being seen by a driver. Motorcyclists sometimes make their motorcycles louder, which helps others hear them coming. On top of that, motorcyclists are taught to drive defensively, so they can stay out of the way of other vehicles.

It's important for drivers on the roads to look twice to help reduce injuries and deaths from motorcycle accidents. Here's how it would work. If you were driving a car and looked to your left to enter a new lane once and saw no one, you may enter the lane and strike a motorcyclist who was in your blind spot.

However, if you looked twice, you may have had time to see the motorcyclist moving back and forth in the lane, letting you know you don't have time to move over without hitting him or her. Drivers have also been urged to give motorcyclists more room, because even a gentle bump at high speeds can cause serious injuries or death.
