Iowa described as a 2-star state for drunk driving prevention

If you've suffered from injuries due to a drunk driving accident in Iowa, then you may be interested in this report from Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The recent MADD report states that Iowa has fallen behind Missouri and Illinois for preventing drunk driving accidents, and this is partially due to the state's lack of laws and programs focused on drunk driving prevention.

Missouri and Illinois received five stars for their work to prevent drunk driving crashes while Iowa received only two. Iowa is falling behind, but in what ways? You may be surprised to know that Iowa doesn't have two of the most obvious preventative measures: sobriety checkpoints and ignition interlock devices.

Both sobriety checkpoints and ignition interlock devices are known to reduce the risk of drunk driving accidents, but the state has not made either required. Programs focused on drunk driving, including sobriety checkpoint and ignition interlock device programs, have been hailed as making people more aware of the consequences of drunk driving, a spokesperson with MADD stated.

While some states are improving their efforts, Iowa does not run sobriety checkpoints, which are stops where police interview drivers and check for drunk and dangerous driving. Iowa has also not passed a law requiring ignition interlock devices for those who have been convicted of drunk driving in the past.

If you've been hurt in a crash because of a drunk truck driver, you may want to discuss your legal options with someone who can help you build your case. With the right help, you may be able to seek compensation, and you can help point out the need for these safety procedures.
