Your damages after a car accident: What to claim for in Iowa

When you're in a car accident in Iowa, you may want to know what kind of injuries you can claim for. There are several types of damages you can claim for including your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering or loss of consortium. You may be able to claim for some or all of these damages, depending on your situation.

Medical expenses are one of the first things you may want to have covered. These could be things like your ambulance fees, consultation fees, therapy needs, emergency care bills and other expenses either current or expected in the future. If you will need future care, an attorney can help calculate the costs based on the estimates given by medical professionals.

Your pain and suffering is also something you can claim for. Pain and suffering is defined as any mental or physical distress you went through. The amount you can claim will be based on the seriousness of your injuries, the amount of pain suffered, and the prognosis you have for the future. Anxiety and stress may also be accounted for if it relates to the accident or injury.

You may want to seek compensation for your lost wages on top of these other two options. You lose some earning capacity when you get in an accident; you may not be able to attend work, or if you were looking for work, you may not be able to continue that search. You may be able to get compensation for those losses.

Finally, the loss of companionship is considered in the kinds of damages you can claim. If the injuries result in the inability for you or your spouse to show affection, then it's called a loss of consortium. These damages must be claimed by your uninjured spouse.
