Pedestrians over-represented in Iowa, national crash data

If you're interested in pedestrian and bicycle crash statistics in the United States and Iowa, then you might be surprised by some of the latest numbers. Every few years, a report is released on the number of people killed in crashes with motor vehicles. In 2012, the total was 4,743 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists. In most cases, it's likely that the crash could have been avoided.

The total number of people killed breaks down to 12 or more people each day of the year. The number of fatalities has fallen over time from 4,901 in 2001 to 4,643 in 2012, but the number of injuries is still high. In 2012, there were 76,000 pedestrian injuries reported; that doesn't include the injuries that were minor and not reported by the victim. When you consider that the number of pedestrians injured is one every seven minutes, you can see why pedestrian safety has to be a major concern for your state.

Pedestrians make up around 14 percent of all traffic fatalities. It's hard to know if walking is more dangerous than driving or biking, but it's clear that pedestrians are overrepresented in crash figures. What is noted is that poor walking facilities can be a higher risk to pedestrians than vehicles. Twenty-four percent of injuries were caused by tripping over uneven or cracked sidewalks, while 12 percent of the total injuries were caused by being hit by a car.

Some other interesting facts point out that 69 percent of the pedestrians killed by traffic in 2012 were male. Around a third of accidents take place at night between 8:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., and it tends to be older people who are injured or killed. The average age of pedestrians killed in 2012 was 46.

When you face serious injuries from a car crash, these statistics can certainly back up your story. Auto-pedestrian accidents are common, although they are decreasing. In any case, you should look into your legal options, so you aren't left with the burden of your injuries and bills to go with them.
