Car accident kills 2 in Iowa

Car accidents can happen suddenly, and when you're driving in a construction zone, it can be difficult to maintain your speed or to understand road markings. That's no excuse for failing to stop or slow down with traffic, though. A failure to stop can cost lives.

If you live in Iowa, you may have heard about a recent car accident that took place. A report from June 19 describes the traffic accident that led to two people being killed and four vehicles crashing. The report states that the two people killed included a 33-year-old man and his passenger, a 23-year-old woman. Both victims were from Martelle.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office deputies attended the scene of the accident. Reportedly, the accident took place when traffic was stopped in a construction zone on Iowa Highway 1. At that point in time, the 33-year-old man's car was struck from behind by sports utility vehicle that did not stop in time. The vehicle was shoved forward into another car.

The car in front of the 33-year-old man's vehicle was also pushed forward and struck the vehicle in front of it. Fortunately, none of the people in the other two cars were injured. Reports do state that the 44-year-old driver of the SUV was hurt. She and her two children were hospitalized following the accident.

This accident near Mount Vernon should serve as a reminder of how important it is to pay attention in unfamiliar areas. The 44-year-old woman from Wisconsin has not yet been charged with a crime, but if it's found that she was distracted at the time of the accident, she could be held liable for the crash. In that case, the family of the victims may be able to seek compensation from her to cover the cost of the victims' funerals, the loss of wages and for pain and suffering.
