Fiery 2-vehicle crash in Iowa traps car occupants

A two-vehicle collision in Dubuque that occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. on April 12 reportedly left two motorists injured. Two other motorists who were involved in the wreck were unhurt and did not require hospitalization. Shortly after the crash, authorities investigated the scene in order to determine the cause. Police stated that charges are likely when the investigation is complete.

According to the police, the accident occurred when a 21-year-old Decorah woman operating a pickup truck on southbound Central Avenue ran a red light and collided with a car at the intersection of 17th Street. The impact caused both vehicles to crash into a utility pole, and the car also caught fire after hitting the pole as well as a curb. Fire and rescue personnel who arrived at the scene immediately put out the fire and then extracted the two individuals who were trapped inside. Neither of the car's occupants was injured.

Rescue workers also had to extract the driver of the truck, who was then transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque to be treated for her injuries. From there, however, she was transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where she received further treatment. A passenger in the truck, a 21-year-old Dubuque woman, was also injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

If the report indicates that the woman who was driving the truck caused the crash by running the red light, the action may constitute negligent driving and may be grounds for her injured passenger to pursue compensation for damages through a personal injury lawsuit against her. The owner of the other vehicle may also consider filing a claim for property damage since the vehicle occupants were uninjured.
