Mapleton woman charged with vehicular homicide

A woman from Iowa has been charged with felony vehicular homicide in connection with an incident that claimed the life of one man. The woman was charged in Monona County Court on August 30 for a drunk driving accident that occurred on Iowa State Highway 141. Iowa State Police reported that the woman drove her 2004 Ford off the road and into a ditch, causing the fatal accident.

The male victim, who died from injuries sustained in the accident, was a passenger in the woman's vehicle. The woman also sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. Neither the driver or her passenger were wearing safety belts at the time of the one-vehicle crash. Police reports indicate that alcohol was a factor in the fatal accident.

The woman was released from jail after posted a $25,000 bond. Because police records indicate that the woman was driving while intoxicated, the victim's family may be able to file additional charges in a civil lawsuit. Charges of negligence and compensation for pain and suffering on behalf of the deceased man are possible components of a lawsuit against the woman.

Experienced attorneys in Des Moines and Polk County may be able to discern what additional charges may be pressed by the victim's family upon further investigation of accident records. With the presence of alcohol in the woman's system, the possibility of higher awards exist for plaintiffs. Competent attorneys familiar with Iowa laws may be able to help secure compensation for funeral expenses and medical treatments that the victim may have incurred before passing away.
