Iowans reminded that April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

One of the most reckless behaviors that motorists in Iowa can engage in while driving is getting distracted. There are a number of distracting behaviors that can affect a person's ability to drive safely, including eating, drinking, reading or talking to other people in the car. However, one of the most dangerous things that a person can do behind the wheel is to text and drive.

Any of these distractions can be a contributing factor in a car accident, but law enforcement has been focused on citing drivers who are paying more attention to their phones than the road. In fact, April has been named Distracted Driving Awareness month in Iowa and nationwide. During the month, police officers are cracking down on citing drivers who are engaged in distracting behaviors including texting and driving.

People generally know that texting and driving in Iowa is illegal. Yet many drivers still take the chance to quickly read or send a text, thinking it is no big deal. However, the reality is that drivers who take their eyes off the road even for a few seconds can travel the length of a football field without every looking up. In that span of time, motorists can swerve into another lane, miss a traffic sign or fail to notice a stopped vehicle in front of them and cause an accident.

Tragically, 400 people die every year in Iowa car accidents. Many of these fatal crashes are caused by a driver who is distracted. Even more non-fatal accidents are caused by a driver who is not paying attention. Victims of these types of accidents have the right to pursue compensation from a negligent driver. The costs associated with medical bills, property damage and ongoing rehabilitation services can be quite substantial. Even though money cannot undo an accident, it can help victims deal with the financial repercussions of getting hurt in a crash.
