How to stay safe when commuting to work by bicycle

On Behalf of | Sep 12, 2017 | Bicycle Accidents

At some point, you may come to find that commuting to work by bicycle is one of the best ways to save money, speed up your commute, and get in a good workout.

While there is nothing wrong with commuting by bicycle, here’s something to remember: Your safety should always come first.

Just the same as commuting by motor vehicle, there are unique risks that you need to be aware of at all times. Here are some tips you can follow to improve your safety:

  • Wear a helmet at all times. If you are on your bike you need to be wearing a helmet. There is never a good time to leave this at home, as your head requires protection at all times.
  • Wear bright and/or reflective clothing. This makes it much easier for drivers to see you, thus decreasing the likelihood of an accident.
  • Don’t push yourself too far. If your workplace is too far away to reach by bicycle, you need to work up to this. If you bite off more than you can chew, you’ll begin to wear down at some point. Subsequently, you’re more likely to make a mistake.
  • Follow the rules of the road. You should never assume that you can ignore the rules of the road because you are on a bicycle, not in a car. You need to know what’s expected of you and follow these rules no matter what.

These are just a few of the many things you can do to improve your overall level of safety when commuting to work by bicycle.

If you are ever part of an accident with a motor vehicle, don’t attempt to ride away from the scene. Stay where you are until help arrives. Once you receive treatment, you can then turn your attention to your legal rights and the steps you can take to receive compensation from the negligent party.
