What are soft-tissue injuries, and can they be severe?

While sprains and soft-tissue injuries aren't always life-threatening conditions, it's a fact that they can impact your ability to enjoy your life. They cause you pain and may decrease your ability to do your job, hurting your financial prospects. On top of that, the medical expense of a sprain is nothing to ignore.

You were involved in a motorcycle accident, so you may consider yourself fortunate to only have soft-tissue injuries. Yes, your accident could have been much worse, but that's not the point. It's your right to obtain compensation from a negligent party, so you can get the medical care you need and the financial assistance you want while you recover.

With minor soft-tissue injuries, it's normal to rest, ice, compress and elevate them to allow them to heal. The goal is reducing swelling, so the body begins to heal. Sprains, which are over-stretched or torn ligaments, require significant rest, especially if the injuries are acute. Severe sprains, known as grade 3 sprains, are a complete tear of a ligament. This complete tear results in your ligament being nonfunctional, making it impossible to use that body part correctly.

Strains are less severe than sprains, but they still cause muscle spasms, swelling, inflammation and other symptoms. Bruising, known as contusions, responds well to the above treatments, too, but each person's case is different. A medical provider needs to look at your injuries to determine if they require any special care or rehabilitation.

After an accident, your attorney needs all the evidence of your injuries you can collect. Take photos and bring medical documents and other information. This is useful information that makes negotiating a settlement easier.
