Iowa celebrates few accidents over the holiday weekend

Any time there are fewer accidents on the road than expected, a state and its officers are sure to celebrate. That's the case now in Iowa, a state very proud to say it had a low number of accidents and arrests over the final holiday weekend of the year. This is great news for anyone who has ever suffered an accident; with the right enforcement, a reduction in crashes can take place and save lives.

An Iowa report from Jan. 2 has celebrated a safe holiday weekend over New Year's. According to the news, Interstate 80's traffic was fairly light, and for most, it was an easy drive to Iowa City and Chicago, both ways. Expecting a congested holiday weekend, this may have been a shock to many.

The weather was a little rainy over the weekend, but with less traffic on the highway, the number of accidents was lower than usual. The Iowa State Patrol indicated that it had more troopers on patrol to help prevent drunk-driving accidents, but there were only a few minor accidents and a couple drunk-driving arrests in all. The Iowa State Patrol sergeant said that overall, the weekend was safe for drivers on the highway, and the patrol was happy with the outcome.

He believes that the biggest impact on safety has come from education. With people making plans for the weekend, it was important for them to consider the number of officers on the roads. They made better decisions because of the extra troopers, which meant fewer people were on the roads after drinking. The news reports that there have been no fatal accidents on the Iowa interstates since Dec. 27, 2016.

Even with minor accidents, victims can still file a claim. In minor accidents like those that happened over the weekend, a claim for medical or repair costs is expected; you can seek compensation for injuries, missed work days and other financial losses.
