Avoid accidents by being a single-task driver

Driving in the winter can be treacherous, which is why it's so important for drivers to take their time and to pay attention to what they're doing. Even if you've had winter driving courses, there are people on the roads who haven't. So, what can people do to make sure they don't cause or get into an accident?

One of the things to remember is that asking the vehicle to do too much can cause an accident. For example, if you try to turn while also simultaneously braking and hit a patch of ice, the wheels are more likely to slide or spin, giving you little to no traction. Instead, come to a stop, then slowly accelerate and take your turn; this is much safer in snowy, potentially icy weather.

Keep your distance from other vehicles. Not everyone knows the best way to handle their vehicles. Slamming on the brakes to avoid a sudden stop in front of you can be much more difficult for your vehicle in the winter, and this can cause you to skid and even impact the other vehicle without enough time to stop. Taking the time to know what your vehicle can and can't do can help in this situation, which is why a winter-weather driving course is advisable in areas that get a lot of snow and ice each year.

If you are involved in an accident, make sure to take photos, and get your vehicles off the road if possible. You'll want to have evidence of the other person;s negligence, so things like the angle of impact can be of importance to police and your attorney.
