Motorcycle safety starts with 4-wheeled vehicle safety

Will safer motorcycles really help lower the risk of injury to motorcyclists? The fact is that many serious accidents are caused by drivers of traditional four-wheeled vehicles. Drivers may pull out into traffic without noticing a motorcyclist, for instance, or they could try to pass too closely and impact the motorcyclist's vehicle. Some drivers may not notice a motorcyclist in the next lane until it's too late to stop and avoid a crash.

The number of motorcyclists injured or killed may fall in the next five to ten years thanks to a changing demographic, changes to cars, and even changes to safety equipment. One of the possible solutions to this issue is a new technology out of Sweden. There, Volvo announced that their new vehicles are going to be as crashworthy as possible; these vehicles will soon be unable to crash due to driver error. How?

The new vehicles are meant to be driver-proof. These cars will be able to steer a vehicle back into lane when it drifts; it may be able to dodge animals in the road, slow down, speed up, and move when needed. Cars may also be able to sense changes in road conditions more quickly than a human. If a car up ahead suddenly slams on its brakes, the car can react faster than you.

That change could help motorcyclists; gone would be the days of blind spots, since the vehicle could identify a motorcyclist in the next lane. Even if the cars don't work 100 percent as proposed, they could still save many lives thanks to this technology.
