Motorcyclists: Dangerous drivers can lead to serious accidents

As a motorcyclist, you're exposed to many kinds of injuries on the roads. If you're thrown from your bike, you could face road rash injuries, broken bones, concussions or head injuries, spinal injuries, bruising and others. While wearing a helmet and protective gear can help, there's little that can be done to protect you from the impact of a heavier vehicle.

In 2010, motorcycle crashes accounted for the deaths of 4,502 people; that's a 55 percent rise from the year 2000. With so many laws changing, there's a question that has to be answered: Why are so many motorcyclists still being injured?

The fact is that many drivers simply don't expect to see motorcyclists on the roads. Even if they do, they may think that they have more time to pull out or turn than they do, because motorcyclists may be traveling faster than they appear thanks to their small size.

Motorcyclists can use lights, weave in their lanes, and use other techniques to stay visible, but drivers still have to be attentive to make sure they don't hit someone. In many cases, when a motorcyclist is hit, he'll be killed due to the impact. If it's not immediate, that means the motorcyclist may be badly injured due to being thrown from the vehicle.

In any kind of crash, deaths and injuries are a possibility. However, when drivers are negligent, speeding, drunk or otherwise impaired, they should be held accountable for the injuries you or a loved one suffered. Our website has more information, so you can learn about your rights as a motorcyclist and victim.
