Major risk factors for truck accidents investigated

What's the cause of most accidents on the road? Fatigue is one of them, as well as the use of cellphones. Another unusual factor that can heighten the risk of someone being in an accident is a higher-than-normal blood pressure reading. Sometimes, these three risk factors come together to cause accidents, and if you're the victim, then you may want to work with your attorney to claim compensation for those injuries. The statistics for these risks are real, and they show how dangerous the risks are for others and the drivers themselves.

For truck drivers, long-haul drives are some of the most dangerous. Truckers are involved in around 250,000 crashes a year in the United States alone, and around 2 percent of the crashes lead to the victims dying. What can be done to protect people who may be in the way when risks become reality?

Researchers have been looking at risk factors and deciding how they contribute to the total number of accidents on the road along with how the factors contribute to overall risk. The research took into account close to 800 truck drivers located at truck shows and truck stops in Iowa, Texas, Utah, Kentucky, Illinois and Nevada.

Some occupational and personal factors that could put these drivers at risk of an accident include long hours, stress, a lack of exercise and a lack of sleep. High blood pressure has been linked to the potential for heart disease, which could be the cause of some medical emergency-related accidents. Truckers, because of the risk for medical emergencies, must have a medical certification every other year. That doesn't mean that all medical problems will be identified or treated, though.
