Drunk driving affects everyone in Iowa

Drunk driving is a serious issue in Iowa, and it's one that can affect more than just the person who is struck or injured in an accident. If you're working with your attorney on a claim against a drunk driver, you may be interested in these statistics about the prominence of drunk driving in the state.

In 2015, there have been 103 total drunk driving fatalities in Iowa, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. These drunk driving related fatalities represent a disproportionate amount of total traffic deaths. In fact, they make up 32.5 percent of total traffic deaths, which is an increase of 7.3 percent since 2014.

Drunk driving arrests and convictions are higher, too. A total of 16,642 DUI arrests were made in 2015, while 12,896 of those arrests turned into convictions. What that means is that a majority of the arrests made were legitimately, resulting in charges and convictions for most who were arrested.

Iowa also feels the burden of drunk driving in the wallets of taxpayers. The total taxpayer subsidy for drunk driving fatalities is $494 million -- millions of dollars that could be spent elsewhere if drunk driving issues were reduced in the state.

Drunk driving affects everyone. The families of victims live with the consequences; the victim could be severely injured or killed in the accident. Drivers often fact years in prison for a mistake that should be avoidable. Someone choosing to drink and drive puts your life at risk, which is why you're now fighting back for the compensation you deserve to move forward with your life.
