1 injured and several cyclists hit in hit-and-run collision

When you ride in a group of cyclists, you probably think you're safe. There is safety in numbers, right? Unfortunately, sometimes being in a group just leads to more injuries. If you get hit by a car and suffer injuries, then you're in a position where you're going to need compensation to pay for your medical care. You could also want to make sure the driver is held accountable.

In Iowa, a recent accident resulted in a cyclist being struck. The crash took place at around 10 a.m., when a bicyclist was riding near 51st Street and Grand Avenue. The cyclist had been participating in a bike ride called the Urban Assault bike ride, which brings together the cycling community.

At one point during the ride, a vehicle collided with several cyclists as it plowed through their ranks. Fortunately, a witness was able to remember the license plate and turned it over to police.

Those plates were registered in Des Moines and led to a damaged vehicle in the 400 block of Third Street. There, the police discovered that the man driving had cut his cheek and was in the shower. He was questioned shortly after he was found at home, and police reported that he was slurring his speech and mumbling. The man denied being in an accident, but when he blew a 0.213 on a breath test, police became suspicious.

When he spoke with his girlfriend, she reportedly told him he had hit someone. Still, the man wouldn't take an official breath test, but he was forced to give a blood-alcohol test at the Broadlawns Medical Center when police getting a warrant. Now, the man awaits 12 charges and is on $36,000 bond for being close to over three times the legal limit for drunk driving.

The 41-year-old bicyclist survived the incident, but his family has not released his condition to the news.
