What do you do after a crash in Iowa?

In Des Moines, Iowa, there are some basic things you need to know about car accidents. Route 65 is an area where you probably see accidents all the time, and it may just so happen that you were in one there, too. What do you do now? How can you make sure your expenses are covered?

The first step is to make sure you don't hurt your own chances of receiving compensation. Don't leave the scene of the accident, and make sure that your information is exchanged with the other driver or drivers involved. Not doing this can result in being convicted of a hit-and-run accident, even if you weren't the one who caused it.

If you are hurt or someone else is injured, you need to call for medical help immediately. If no one is hurt, you can try to move your vehicles out of the way if possible, but if not, simply try to stay out of the way of traffic until the police arrive and can assist you. When the police arrive, you'll be asked to fill out some paperwork to report the crash, and you should take information down as well. Try to obtain witness information, photographs at the scene, and all information you can get on the driver who caused the accident.

Remember, don't apologize, especially if the accident isn't your fault. It may make it seem like you're at fault and result in having your apology used against you in court. Simply answer the questions asked by police, but don't offer any information that isn't asked for.
