Drunk-driving statistics: Fatalities cost millions to taxpayers

Have you been a victim of drunk driving or know someone who has been? If so, then you're probably concerned about the drunk driving statistics in Iowa. Mothers Against Drunk Driving keeps tabs on the statistics surrounding drug driving in Iowa, so anyone who needs information can get it quickly.

With ignition interlock devices and other enforcement activities, the numbers listed here could be reduced. For instance, did you know that there were 103 people killed in traffic accidents involving people with blood alcohol content levels of .08 or higher? On top of that, there were 937 alcohol-related crash injuries reported in 2011, the latest information provided by MADD.

Alcohol-related crashes where a person had a BAC of .01 or higher totaled 1,665, although it can't be proven that cases involving that low of a BAC were directly related to alcohol itself. Statistically speaking, drunk driving has led to 16,642 arrests and 12,896 convictions in 2011, resulting in high costs to taxpayers and other organizations.

In Iowa, there are several laws that can work against a drunk driver. For instance, if a drunk driver killed another person intentionally or due to negligence, he or she can be charged with vehicular homicide. If the person had past convictions for DUIs, it's possible that the latest one could be made a felony, resulting in harsher penalties.

How much do these drunk drivers cost Iowa and other taxpayers? Approximately $494 million for the drunk-driving fatalities caused alone. That's money spent on medical care, funeral costs, investigations and other important aspects of a drunk driving case.
