How many fatalities are caused by drunk drivers in Iowa?

Drunk driving accidents take a toll on Iowa's population, and as a driver, you may want to know the dangers that put you at risk on the roads. The latest state facts from the Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility report fatality data for drunk driving crashes in 2012. These statistics show how a simple error in judgment can lead to lasting consequences for victims.

For instance, in 2012, it's shown that there were a total of 92 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities. Additionally, there were 11 underage alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, showing that those under the age of 21 are still getting alcohol when it should not be easy to access.

In 2012, alcohol-impaired driving fatalities totaled 3 per 100,000 people. Since 2002, there has been a 17.2 percent drop in the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities for those over 21 and a drop of 26.4 percent for those under 21. What this shows is that programs to reduce drunk driving, safety equipment and other laws may be helping keep you safe on the roads, but they are not completely successful in doing so.

The percent of fatalities caused by those with a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher was 77, also pointing to the fact that many who drive drunk in the state are well beyond the legal limit. Only 12.5 percent of drivers in fatal crashes caused by repeat offenders had a BAC under .14 percent.

These statistics can be frightening, especially if you've lost someone to a drunk driver or are dealing with injuries from a crash. Overall, Iowa has been successful in reducing the number of fatalities in the last decade and should continue to put effort into doing so.
