Female bus driver in New Jersey receives 3 years' probation

An ex-New Jersey transit bus driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident has now been sentenced, according to a Dec. 19 report. She has received a sentence of three years' probation for causing the accident that resulted in a 49-year-old man's death. This case has taken several years to get to the courts, and now two families can finally rest with its conclusion.

The woman who was driving the bus, a 67-year-old, also received one year in jail as part of her punishment, but this is suspended and won't have to be served if she completes her probation with no violations. She will also have to perform 150 hours of community service aimed at helping educate young drivers about safe driving. She had been on time to retire the previous year, but she had continued driving in order to stay active; she has now retired as of 2013. The woman had been charged with vehicular homicide after the accident in September 2012; she initially faced a higher charge, but it was reduced.

At the time of the accident, the man who was killed had been a passenger on the bus. When he got out, he entered a crosswalk on Main Avenue, and that's when the bus struck him. The prosecutors claimed that the driver had accelerated through a yellow light as it was turning red, and because of this, ran a red light before she struck the man.

The driver, who had never had any trouble with the law in the past, may have received a lesser sentence due to this fact. She said that the accident was something she never wanted to happen.
