Pedestrian accident injures 1 in Des Moines

An accident left a Des Moines pedestrian injured after a 19-year-old driver struck her while she was jogging. There was a witness on the scene who reported that the jogger had been at a crosswalk and was waiting for traffic to pass. When she stepped into the crosswalk to continue on, she was reportedly struck by the 19-year-old driver.

The 22-year-old woman was jogging at 31st Street and Kingman Boulevard when the crash took place. It was around 11:45 a.m., so it should have been light enough to see the woman. Police did not indicate if they believed the woman had the "walk" signal when she proceeded into the crosswalk.

What they do know is that when the woman was hit, it was hard enough that the impact shattered the car's windshield. The jogger was thrown into the air and landed approximately 35 feet from the crosswalk. When she was taken to the hospital, she was reportedly conscious.

Police reported that the driver of the car stayed at the scene following the accident. She has reportedly been cooperative with law enforcement. Police think that this might have been an unfortunate accident. Despite this, they reported that the crash is under investigation and that charges are pending for the collision.

Pedestrian accidents can result in serious injuries and death. Anyone who has been hit by a negligent driver has the right to seek compensation to cover medical care and other financial burdens. Local prosecutors may choose to press criminal charges, but victims also have the option to seek compensation through a civil lawsuit.
