Hit-and-run victim still recovering more than one year later

Anyone who plans to go for a peaceful jog is probably focused on little more than what route they will take and what music they will listen to. Very few think about the worst-case scenario -- being hit by a vehicle traveling the same road.

A young Norwalk, Iowa mother lived this nightmare in Nov. 2012. She was out for a jog at roughly 9:30 p.m. when she was hit by a car from behind. The woman was wearing the appropriate reflective gear. However, she was on the wrong side of the Des Moines road because the sidewalk on the other side wasn't conducive to running.

Although the car was only traveling at 35 miles per hour, it was enough to catapult her onto the windshield before she fell off to the side and landed in the road. The driver continued instead of stopping to see if she needed help. A neighbor discovered her a short time later.

The victim was taken to Mercy Medical Center where she spent four days receiving treatment. Her rehabilitation continues.

The man who was driving the car reportedly called his attorney instead of dialing 911. He said he considered committing suicide that night, but turned himself into police a few days later instead. In March 2013, he pleaded guilty to a variety of charges, including leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury. He received a two-year suspended jail sentence as well as two years of probation. He must also participate in community service and alcohol education.

Since he appeared to be tormented over the incident and since the man's mother paid $10,000 in medical bills for the victim, she opted not to file a lawsuit against the driver. Many people who find themselves in this situation do engage legal counsel to help recover medical expenses and other financial burdens that may continue for many years after an accident.
