Iowa woman charged for 2012 fatal hit-and-run accident

According to reports, a 43-year-old woman who is believed to have been involved in a fatal 2012 hit-and-run crash turned herself in on April 1. She was charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident, but a few hours later, deputies from the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office released her from custody after she posted a $75,000 bail bond.

At approximately 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 22, 2012, a 22-year-old male pedestrian was discovered lying on Floyd Boulevard in Sioux City. He had apparently suffered critical head trauma, and he subsequently died from his injuries. The police determined that a vehicle had hit him, and their investigation led them to an owner of a 2000 Chevy Blazer. However, at that time, no arrests were made because the authorities were unclear about who was driving the vehicle.

Family members of the deceased man held demonstrations twice in which they demanded justice for the loss of their loved one. In February 2013, the mother of the man filed a civil lawsuit for an unreported amount that names the woman as a passenger in the vehicle that hit the man and the driver as an unidentified individual. Sources say that the case has not gone to trial as of yet.

When pedestrian accidents like this occur, the family of the victim may file a wrongful death lawsuit against the liable party. A personal injury attorney might represent families seeking compensation for their loss and expenses incurred because of the fatal accident. In this case, the man's family sought compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of future income and loss of companionship.
