Alleged failure to stop at red light injures 5

The Iowa community of Spirit Lake was the scene of a two-car crash that injured five individuals on Monday, March 10. A motorist's alleged failure to obey a red light was the cause of the collision.

Police report that a 49-year-old male was southbound on Highway 71 when he failed to stop his 2007 Ford Ranger pickup truck at a red stop light at the intersection with 23rd Street. His vehicle then struck a 2006 Chevrolet driven by a 24-year-old female on the passenger side. Reports say the woman had right of way.

There were five people in the Chevrolet at impact, and all were transported to Lakes Regional Healthcare via ambulance. The conditions and injuries suffered by those individuals were not available in reports. There was also no report of injury to the pickup truck driver.

Following the crash, Spirit Lake police redirected traffic near the intersection. Evidence of the collision remained afterward in the form of pieces of broken plastic taillight covers scattered along the roadways. The Ford Ranger was said to have sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage, and the Chevrolet was believed to have incurred $7,500 in damage. The man that had been driving the pickup was cited for a failure to obey a traffic control device.

Running a red light may be considered negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and those injured in such a crash might consider personal injury litigation in civil court. Such lawsuits commonly seek compensation for lost wages, medical expenses and pain and suffering. In this case, a personal injury attorney may be able to help the occupants of the Chevrolet hold the Ford driver liable for damages.
