Driver charged in crash that claimed life of Iowa man

An Iowa man who was a passenger in a 2008 Pontiac G6 operated by an alleged drunk driver was found dead at the scene of an accident that occurred in Davenport on Dec. 10. The driver who crashed the car into the front of a building and then fled the scene is now facing OWI and related charges, according to the Assistant Chief of Police for the Davenport Police Department.

The crash occurred at 2:24 a.m. at 3707 N. Brady St. A police investigation following the incident revealed that speed may have been an additional factor in the fatal auto accident. Reports indicate that when the driver lost control of his northbound Pontiac, it went off the right side of the road and became airborne before it collided with the building. After the driver was located and later released from medical care, he was taken into custody. He is now being held at the Scott County Jail.

The 22-year-old driver faces a long list of charges, including homicide by vehicle/operating while intoxicated, first-offense operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a death accident, failure to have valid license and failure to maintain control of vehicle. Because drunk driving is indicative of negligence or reckless driving, the family of the passenger killed in the crash could decide to seek damages against the driver in a wrongful death lawsuit.

No amount of money can change the choices made by the allegedly intoxicated driver in this case or reverse the chain of events that led to the loss of a loved one. However, justice sought through the civil court could help the family find closure as well as provide the financial means needed to resolve their family member's unexpected and possibly overwhelming funeral and interment expenses.
