Iowa police targeting drunk drivers during holiday weekend

Did you know that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for children and adults in the U.S.? Car accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, but the reality is that many of them could be prevented if drivers take steps to operate their vehicles safely. Unfortunately, not all motorists take this responsibility seriously. This can be especially true when it comes to drunk drivers.

Even though Iowa has a lower rate of crashes involving alcohol than almost every other state, the risks of getting hurt in a drunk driving accident in Iowa are still very real. With the holiday weekend coming up, Des Moines and state authorities have announced that they will be targeting these drunk drivers in order to prevent crashes and make it another safe weekend.

Last Labor Day, there were no traffic fatalities caused by alcohol in this state. That is certainly a positive report for residents to read, but there are no guarantees that this year will be as safe. Nationwide, about one-third of all fatal crashes involve a drunk driver and in 2011, 9,878 people lost their lives in these types accidents.

With this in mind, police are increasing their efforts and resources to stop drunk drivers before they cause an accident. The enforcement campaign is called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and drivers may notice a surge in traffic stops through the long weekend.

It is very common for state authorities to step up enforcement of traffic violations during holiday weekends, including Labor Day. There are more people who have the day off work and end up celebrating the brief vacation with friends and family. In many cases, these celebrations involve alcohol and it may be more likely that a person will get behind the wheel after drinking too much during this time. This decision could end up putting other motorists in serious danger of being hurt or killed in a crash. But hopefully this holiday weekend will be as safe for Iowa residents as it was last year.
