Victim of Iowa drunk driving accident stops drunk driver

Drunk drivers pose a serious threat to others when they get in the driver's seat of a motor vehicle. Despite marketing, educational and enforcement efforts to keep people from driving drunk, too many people still take the risk of driving while intoxicated.

Drivers who get behind the wheel after drinking too much are rarely thinking very clearly at the time. Luckily, one young woman was able to think clearly and act quickly to stop a drunk driver from fleeing the scene of a recent and tragic drunk driving accident in Iowa. She was able to prevent a man from doing more damage than he had already done.

The accident occurred one day after Independence Day, which is a time that law enforcement officials often crackdown on drunk drivers. However, a 31-year-old man decided to take the chance and drive after allegedly consuming six beers anyway. He was driving the wrong way down Veterans Memorial Highway when he approached a car with four teenagers inside.

The man crashed into the other vehicle and then tried to flee the scene of the horrific accident. A 17-year-old girl was killed in the accident and three other girls were seriously injured. However, one of the teens in the other car was able to escape from the wrecked vehicle and take the car keys away from the man so he could not drive away and hurt even more people.

The alleged drunk driver was arrested but still maintains that he was not responsible for the crash, despite reports that indicate he had consumed multiple alcoholic beverages prior to getting in his car and driving the wrong way down the highway.

A drunk driver's judgment is often clouded and impaired by the alcohol. They drive recklessly and may leave the scene of an accident because they do not want to take responsibility for their completely reckless behavior. However, victims can hold these drivers accountable for their actions by filing civil charges and pursuing compensation for a crash.
